DIY Insulation Projects Could Save Over £2.5 Billion Pounds

The recent snowy weather in December and January this year has left a revealing picture. A quick glance during the snow at your neighbours roofs would tell you who has and who has not carried out loft or cavity wall insulation. Quite simply, if the snow has remained on your neighbours’ roofs then their house is well insulated and heat is not escaping. If the snow however has melted, then heat is escaping from their house – and this, Tool-Net claims, could be costing us dearly. Informed estimates have placed the potential savings to us as a nation at over £2.5 billion.

A recent survey has highlighted that possibly only half of Britain’s 26.5 million households have any form of loft insulation and even fewer (less than 40%) have their cavity wall’s insulated. With the potential collective savings estimation, this is one DIY project households should not be sleeping on.

Tool-Net, a leading online power tool supply store, expressed surprise that so few households had tackled this simple DIY project. In recent years, the customer base for Tool-Net.co.uk has seen more and more DIY enthusiasts alongside the established customer base of trades people, using the site to source competitively priced power tools. It would seem, however, that mundane projects such as insulating a loft are not always the DIY enthusiast’s number one priority. Instead many are opting for more grandiose projects such as in-depth woodworking or building projects. Tool-Net claim they may be missing a trick. In the long run, some simple DIY tasks can end up saving the largest amount of money.

Tool-Net.co.uk offers over 6,500 power tools and power tool accessories giving consumers one of the widest choices available. Their comprehensive stock range includes saws, drills, grinders, nail guns, routers, sanders, lathes, nibblers, pressure washers and all types of power tools, fixings and consumables. Tool-Net stocks extensive product ranges from power tool brands such as Bosch, Fein, Makita, Rawl, Stil, Black & Decker, DeWalt and Hitachi.

A spokesperson from Tool-Net commented: “We have been surprised at the number of DIY enthusiasts rather than trades people who are now ordering power tools such as a Clarke Air Compressor rather than just a drill or saw. It means that people are increasingly confident enough to tackle complex DIY projects in their home. This is great – and we are happy to advise and support them. We’re just surprised that many people aren’t also doing the simple DIY projects, like loft insulation, that may not carry the kudos but can really make a saving and a difference.”

Dem-Con Shingle Grinding, Shingle Processing Poised for Growth

Dem-Con Companies, an innovator in construction and demolition recycling and one of the top shingle recycling companies in the area, announced today that it has increased investment into mobile shingle grinding. Dem-Con’s mobile recycling service diverts shingles from landfills into cost-effective, environmentally sound replacement to virgin oil used in hot-mix asphalt.

“Our activities parallel the findings of the recent NDA survey, and we at Dem-Con echo the optimism expressed by some member companies,” said Chris Guillemette, vice president, business development, Dem-Con Companies. “Our experience and reinvestment into Dem-Con’s shingle recycling service puts us in a position to accommodate this growth and service landfills and other facilities that collect but that do not have the internal resources to recycle shingles.”

Dem-Con Expands Mobile Shingle Grinding Service

Dem-Con Companies, an innovator in construction and demolition recycling and one of the top shingle recycling companies, expands its mobile shingle grinding service to recycle roofing material and construction waste into a saleable product that would otherwise end up in landfills. Dem-Con’s mobile recycling service is ideal for landfills and hot-mix asphalt production facilities that segregate and prepare, but lack the resources to recycle tear off shingles.

Dem-Con Expands Mobile Shingle Grinding Service

“Dem-Con’s mobile shingle recycling service enables customers to produce and sell a valuable material used in hot mix asphalt, from materials that would have gone to landfills,” said Chris Guillemette, vice president, business development, Dem-Con Companies. “The service has been very well embraced and we are steadily expanding, working consistently across the U.S.”

As a full or custom on-site service, Dem-Con’s mobile shingle grinding utilizes customers’ own equipment to save cost. For facilities not equipped with the machinery, Dem-Con supplies all of the equipment, providing technical and operational assistance — from delivery of shingles from the jobsite to hot mix design. The service includes a mobile staff that can travel anywhere in the U.S. The company has invested in multiple machines that enable its staff to fit into the customer’s schedule. The service is available anywhere in the U.S.

Dem-Con Shingle Processing is a company developed to recover shingles resulting from the manufacturing process as well as tear-off shingles from homes. Tens of thousands of tons are currently buried in landfills each year and Dem-Con shingle recycling is working to recover and provide alternative uses for this material to reduce reliance on virgin asphalt. Dem-Con works with many government and other organizations to develop equipment, specifications and end-use options for this material. The company, which will recycle more than 25,000 tons of shingles in 2010, offers local and mobile shingle grinding services.

HSS Hire Supports News Ladder Safety Campaign

HSS Hire, the UK’s award-winning tool and equipment hire company, has announced it will be supporting the Ladder Association’s new safety campaign ‘Don’t be a Ladder Lightweight’.

HSS Hire Supports News Ladder Safety Campaign

The initiative will encourage proper training in ladder use to help combat the over-confident and sometimes unsafe approach of ladder users who underestimate the associated dangers. The campaign is also aimed at ensuring ladder users, managers and supervisors are competent in line with Work at Height regulations.

With an estimated 2 million operated daily, ladders are – and will remain – an invaluable and flexible piece of workplace equipment. However, as with any type of working at height, they pose potential risks to the well-being of the operator and the ‘Ladder Lightweight’ campaign hopes to educate those that take ladders and their associated risks for granted.

Ladder Association chairman, Chris Ball, says: “Sadly, familiarity breeds contempt. Our aim is simply to promote an informed and professional approach to ladder use, just like any other piece of access equipment. Falls can be avoided by sensible and proportionate management of the risks – knowledge and skills best acquired through training. We’ve actively supported the Health and Safety Executive’s Ladder Exchange initiative for the last 3 years to help highlight the importance of safe ladder use”.

Integral to the initiative is the association’s new Code of Practice which can also be used as a stand-alone reference. With a foreward from the HSE, the code comprises employers’ and users’ responsibilities, the Working at Height Regulations, risk avoidance and the importance of planning, inspection and maintenance. The CoP also complements the Ladder Association’s one-day training course, offered by HSS Training.

Head of Health and Safety at HSS, David Wilson, adds: “The ladder is, and always will be, integral to working at height but it’s also not without risk. It’s really important that people understand the dangers of using ladders in the workplace and at home and that they are aware of the correct procedures to help minimise those risks. By using the right equipment, by ensuring that it’s fit for purpose and by being aware of the safest working practices, the risk can be managed and ladders can be used safely. We’re able to help on all accounts and are delighted to be supporting this latest ladder safety campaign”.

HSS Hire remains the only tool and equipment hire company to have achieved the coveted 4* British Safety award and also offer a comprehensive range of industry-recognised safety, technical and personnel training courses.

HSS Hire Service Group is a UK-based tool rental and equipment hire chain that has been serving big businesses, trade and DIY customers since 1957. It is the Hire Association Europe’s Hire Company of the Year 2009 and Contract Journal’s Plant Hire Company of the Year 2009. It has just been recognised by the HAE for Excellence in Customer Care.

Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Award Won By Nail Jack Tools

Nail Jack Tools unveiled their first two nail pulling pliers – the Nail Jack® and Nail Hunter® at the 2009 National Hardware Show in Las Vegas this week and were informed that the Nail Jack has captured Popular Mechanics’ prestigious Editor’s Choice Award.

Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Award

The publication does not accept submissions for their award, but instead chooses winners from thousands of products based on originality, ingenuity and design. The award recognized Nail Jack Tools for its innovative design in the Nail Jack nail puller – the first hand tool designed as a pliers like device to dig, grab and pull nails, staples and brads. Popular Mechanics called the Nail Jack nail puller a “fresh new hand tool” in a product category that “rarely sees true innovation.”

“We are honored to be recognized by this esteemed group of editors for the 2009 Editor’s Choice Award from Popular Mechanics,” says Nail Jack CEO Mike Foley. “The show has been a great opportunity to showcase our tools, and winning an award like this really confirms the need for a new line of tools designed specifically from the ground up to pull nails and fasteners without damaging costly wood products.”

The patented and patent-pending designs of the Nail Jack and Nail Hunter fill a large gap in the retail market and construction industry. Designed like pliers, these unique tools do most of their work with “one hand”, or can be struck with a hammer to dig out a nail, grab a headless brad or nail with their jaws while utilizing a built in fulcrum. The family of tools is specifically designed to pull nails, staples and fasteners with efficiency – saving time and money.

The Idaho-based company founded in 2006 unveiled the Nail Jack tool line at this year’s National Hardware Show. For more information, please visit the company’s website at www.nailjack.com or call the company at 1-877-PULL-NAIL (or at +1-208-928-6426).

Reasor Products, Inc. – The Experts In Warming Bags

Reasor Products, Inc., of Duluth, Minnesota, introduces a new product to the construction industry from its line of warming bags, a Caulk Warming Bag. This unique patented bag will solve an age old problem in the building trades of keeping items warm in cold weather with a light weight economical heat source.

The Caulk Warmer has been awarded a Bronze Medal in recognition of the invention of the Caulk Warmer, at the Minnesota Inventors Congress 51st Annual Invention Show in Redwood Falls, MN. There is a convenient on/off switch and the internal temperature is thermostatically controlled and requires only 50 watts of power, due to its patented flexible heat reflecting shield that retains heat. A 12V DC lighter adapter is also available. Suggested retail is $79.95 and is available in stores and on line at www.caulkwarmer.com.

The Minnesota Inventors Congress (MIC) is a private, non profit organization established to further the inventor’s products that originate in Minnesota. MIC is also one of the originators of the Minnesota Inventors Convention held in Redwood Falls, MN every June.
