Jon Ahrens of Madrone LDC Wins 2010 Honor Award from Texas ASLA

Jon Ahrens, owner of Madrone LDC, a landscape architecture firm that takes advantage of nature and the land’s natural topography to design and construct its projects, was awarded a 2010 Honor Award from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (TX ASLA) for Chris Park in San Antonio.

Jon Ahrens of Madrone LDC Wins 2010 Honor Award from Texas ASLA

TX ASLA recognized Ahrens, of Austin-based Madrone, at an awards banquet March 11 th in San Antonio for the Chris Park project. Ahrens’ award came in the Design: Constructed Projects Category, which recognizes site-specific works of landscape architecture and urban design. Chris Park, once part of a neglected industrial area, is now an inviting green space with a unique mix of plants, terrain and artwork. As envisioned by the client, the late Linda Pace, the park memorializes and celebrates her late son. It provides a playful yet calming escape from the city, improving the lives of locals while introducing environmental improvements. Chris Park is part of a larger mixed development project.

“We worked collaboratively with Linda Pace and several Pace Foundation artists to achieve the right mix of plants and contemporary art,” said Ahrens. “Our challenge was to convert an old industrial parking lot into a lush garden that would give back to the residents of San Antonio for decades to come.”

The judges, members of the Colorado ALSA Chapter, reviewed the entries based on design quality, functionality, context and environmental responsibility. Entries were also judged on relevance to the profession, the public and the environment; and design value to the client. According to a TX ASLA Award Committee chair, “T he Colorado jury loved the [Chris Park] story and the amount of thought that went into the creation of the spaces.”

Park highlights include Chris Hill, where a Natchez Mock Orange Tree blooms abundantly in Chris’ birth month of April, the entrance fountain with an intricately designed drainage system to ensure that water does not pond and kids can safely run about, and t he Starfield, where 55 LED light fixtures shine tiny blue lights into the nighttime sky and represent the constellations the day of Chris’ birth.

Ken’s Yard, New Nationwide Building Supplies Site, Goes Live

Ken’s Yard, a new nationwide building supplies website selling over 30,000 well known branded products on-line has now gone live.

Ken's Yard, New Nationwide Building Supplies Site, Goes Live

Behind Ken’s Yard are three experienced and respected traders in timber and building products, Charles McLeish, Joe McConville – previous owners of MGM Timber, and Ken McLelland – former Regional Director of Buildbase (see notes to editors). The board has been strengthened further by the addition of Charles Shaw, Chairman of the hugely successful 5pm.co.uk and former Chief Executive of Invergordon Distillers plc and Andrew Sutherland former UK Financial Controller and Company Secretary of Keyline Builders Merchants.

Aimed at the ‘serial’ project builder, self-builder and small building contractor in the UK and beyond, Ken’s Yard now provides the most comprehensive and competitive range of building supplies currently available on-line. These are supported by easily accessible advice from some of the supply industry’s most experienced, knowledgeable and professional experts.

Ken’s Yard is now part of the vanguard of suppliers changing the way building supplies are purchased and brings several ‘firsts’ to the market:

– Ken’s Yard currently sells 30,000 products which will rise to an estimated 45,000 in Phase 2.

– Ken’s Yard sells the full HOPPE door furniture range from Germany, one of only a few suppliers to do so, and is the first to sell the complete Carron Phoenix range of kitchen sinks, taps and accessories. It also supplies the complete range of Kahrs hardwood flooring products. Other well-known brand names are already in the pipeline and will be added in Phase 2. This includes the full JELD-WEN joinery products catalogue and the full Velux catalogue.

A unique building estimates service for extensions, refurbishments and new-build projects. This provides a massive timesaving for building professionals and enables them to get jobs costed quickly and accurately. This will initially be offered free as a launch ‘special’ to customers who spend £500 or more.

– Ken’s Yard is the only UK based website where customers can upload a drawing, or enter measurements to obtain a quote. Ken’s Yard handles the entire ordering process and items like roof trusses will be delivered direct to site within 14 days.

About Ken’s Yard:
Ken’s Yard is an independent on-line building products company founded after extensive research by an experienced team who care about service.

ServiceSpider.com – An Auction Website For Homeowners And Contractors

ServiceSpider makes the online auction process that has long been used by companies like eBay, available for homeowners and contractors to buy and sell services on the Internet.

After beta testing for a year ServiceSpider releases a new version of their auction website with many new features such as forums. On ServiceSpider.com homeowners can save time and money by letting contractors compete for their home improvement needs.

Homeowner Haye Kesteloo came up with the idea for ServiceSpider while working on a bathroom remodel project in 2006. “As I started to contact different contractors to get quotes for my project, I found it difficult to establish what a fair price should be for a job well done.” Prices, time estimates, and other factors varied from one contractor to another, and Kesteloo found himself wondering if there wasn’t a better way to navigate the Home Improvement market using the Internet. Kesteloo decided to stop wondering and to make the idea a reality, helping homeowners and contractors in the process. With that plan in motion, ServiceSpider was born.

Most homeowners know how difficult and time consuming it can be to find the right contractor for a home improvement job. Scheduling appointments, checking references and licenses and other related issues can make a job seem much more difficult than it needs to be. This is where ServiceSpider comes in. As a homeowner, one needs only to go to http://www.servicespider.com, and create a posting about the job that needs to be done. Need a leaky shower fixed? Maybe it’s time to upgrade the electrical panel? Or perhaps it’s time to replace those old windows? Whatever the home improvement needs are, once the job is posted at ServiceSpider, the service request will show up on the site’s home page, and will be automatically send to matching service providers in the area. Free of charge to the homeowner, ServiceSpider will have pre-screened contractors offering competing bids for the job. One can even read the reviews from other homeowners on different contractors and see how they are rated.

Currently, in the greater New York area alone, there are over 700 service providers, so a match can be made quickly and efficiently. The homeowner chooses how, when and where they will be contacted, be it phone, fax, or email. The homeowner is in charge!

For Haye Kesteloo, making ServiceSpider a success is a full time job. He knows that finding the right contractor for the right job and for the right price can be a challenge, especially in the current economic climate. Kesteloo offers the following advice: “Take your time when choosing the right contractor. Don’t let yourself be hurried into making a decision. Make sure the contractor you hire is licensed and insured and that you receive a written contract.”

For additional information regarding ServiceSpider, please contact Haye Kesteloo directly or go to www.servicespider.com.
